Cambridge Pixel supplies radar display and target tracking technology to enhance SeaOwl’s VMAS (Vessel Monitoring and Alert System).
Cambridge Pixel has supplied its radar processing modules to SeaOwl Technology Solutions, the Defence and R&D subsidiary of the SeaOwl Group (seaowlgroup.com). As specialists in maritime surveillance and fleet monitoring, the modules will be used to support the security of oil fields and complex offshore infrastructure.
The software modules provide radar acquisition, target tracking, scan conversion and display capabilities. They form part of a maritime security solution developed by SeaOwl for TotalEnergies Nigeria in the Gulf of Guinea, a vast maritime area stretching along the West African coast from Gabon to Liberia.
This partnership marks the 10-year anniversary of the successful deployment of the VMAS (Vessel Monitoring and Alert System). Developed and maintained by SeaOwl, VMAS plays a central role in the ongoing protection of offshore installations against piracy and maritime threats, leveraging the advanced radar technology of Cambridge Pixel’s solutions.
SeaOwl’s VMAS is a sophisticated web-based client-server application. It is currently deployed by TotalEnergies in Nigeria to manage all maritime activity across the four offshore fields, covering an area of more than 10,000 square kilometres. This includes managing dozens of assets such as oil platforms and supply vessels, as well as the continuous monitoring of more than 500 ships, including tankers, using a combination of radars and AIS (Automatic Identification System) sensors.
Engineers at SeaOwl Technology Solutions, based in Ollioules, France, turned to Cambridge Pixel to connect the VMAS system to existing radars and enhance site protection against pirates and other small, non-cooperative hostile targets. SeaOwl was seeking an open, modular solution that would be compatible with and easily integrated into the web-based client-server architecture of the VMAS system. Cambridge Pixel supplied key technology modules for radar acquisition, display, multi-hypothesis tracking, and scan conversion, enabling SeaOwl to interface with multiple radar types, extract targets, and present a unified display of track data and radar video.
The VMAS system is now deployed across several African countries and was recently selected by TotalEnergies to protect all of its assets in Angola.
Gilles Tonietto, Maritime Surveillance Systems Manager of SeaOwl Technology Solutions, said: “It is important to continue the collaboration with Cambridge Pixel that began now 10 years ago in order to keep providing quality and competitive products. Furthermore, Cambridge Pixel's engineering team is extremely responsive in all new projects carried out by SeaOwl, and we can rely on their expertise and advice.”
David Johnson, Director at Cambridge Pixel, added: "This project highlights the flexibility of our software to support complex maritime security operations where adaptability, integration with existing equipment, and high performance are critical. We're proud to continue our long-standing partnership with SeaOwl and to play a part in protecting offshore assets."
